“Role Modeling Healthy Habits”

Everyone has experienced how easily children model what we do and say, so it should come as no surprise that parents’ eating behaviors influence their children’s food choices as well. Setting a good example in terms of eating habits is just as important as enforcing other rules in the house. For example, if one expects their child not to put their elbows on the table during dinner, parents should follow the same practice in order to enforce the rule. Making healthy food choices in front of your children can have a similar effect, and even encourage them to do the same as well. Having a glass of skim milk instead of soda, or opting for an apple as an afternoon snack are all great practices children can mirror. But remember, this can also be a double-edged sword, as children tend to copy their parents’ bad habits as well. This is why it is important for parents to be good role models for their children in order to set the tone for a healthy lifestyle.
